The Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) is the premier DOE lab for applied materials and advanced manufacturing technologies. Focus is on the DOE Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at ORNL which is enabling demonstration of next-generation materials and manufacturing technologies. Major technology thrust areas include additive manufacturing (AM) and low cost/high performance carbon fiber composites. AM capabilities have been expanded to include a big area AM system for composites and a new state-of-the art Arcam A2XX system for metals. Also highlighted is the DOE Carbon Fiber Technology Facility (CFTF) at ORNL , a state-of-the-art fiber research facility with the world's only semi-production line that is designated to produce low cost fibers from multiple precursors in multiple forms. The first carbon fiber lot rolled off the CFTF production line earlier this year. Collaborations are on-going with several industry partners giving them access to the MDF and the CFTF.
