The objective of the 2012 DMSMS & Standardization Conference is to capture, understand, and institutionalize best practices in DMSMS and Standardization policies, procedures, guidance, and tools. These best practices will significantly improve the ability of DoD program managers to proactively manage the obsolescence risk for defense systems, thus increasing agility, affordability and efficiency. Activities required to attain this goal include Parts Management, Standardization, Product Support, Total Life Cycle Management, Value Engineering, and Counterfeit part mitigation.

DoD strategic shaping factors, such as the budget reduction, 2012 Strategic Review and contingency operations drawdown, will significantly impact military acquisition and sustainment planning for the foreseeable future. The United States deficit situation will continuously increase fiscal restraint that will ripple throughout our national industrial base. Weapon system life cycles will lengthen and re-set or replacement acquisition will be stretched. Therefore, Life Cycle Management must proactively improve weapon system product support of today's major systems and plan for disciplined life cycle risk management that includes technical initiatives for achieving greater efficiency and productivity in DoD and the defense industrial base.

Agility, affordability and efficiency are the paths to meet this challenge, and a disciplined approach must include proactive DMSMS efforts suitable for an environment of uncertainty. As the military seeks a quicker, more lethal war fighting capability within affordability constraints, the DoD must implement business practices that respond to materiel readiness issues rapidly and efficiently. Utilization of modern information technology to anticipate problems and share solutions is a critical requirement to maintain the Warfighter's full mission capability. This conference will present an opportunity to hear the views of government, military and industrial leaders on what will be required to support the modern Warfighter in the current environment and a forum to discuss the best programmatic, technical and logistical approaches.
